A small hot-tasting pod of a variety of capsicum. There are various forms with pods of differing size, colour, and strength of flavour.  Used in sauces, relishes, spice powders and cakes! 

I’ve always know chillies were good for you.  I have a million aunties who all tell me incessantly! But it’s been interesting reading about their health benefits.

The main component in chillies is a chemical called capsaicin, which is responsible for the intense heat and has anti-bacterial, anti-carcinogenic, analgesic and anti-diabetic properties. It has also been found to reduce LDL cholesterol levels.

Chillies also contain vitamin C – 100g of fresh chillies provide over 200% of the recommended daily allowance so that’s good news for boosting your immune system.

Chillies are also known to produce endorphins – otherwise known as feel good hormones.  I was always given food containing chillies at the end of my pregnancy and I never really understood why.  I always felt so happy afterwards and put it down to good home cooked Indian food and the satisfaction this gives.  Did those aunties know all along about the endorphins and oxytocin that would be released?  Did they feed me to stimulate my contractions and make sure little babies were delivered safely on time?  I don’t really care.  It worked for me!
