The Crab And Winkle Restaurant, Whistable

Whitstable is a pretty little town with lovely lifestyle shops selling sea-themed goods as you would expect but there are also some great artisan food shops. We didn’t have the patience to wander round though as we were hungry for some hearty food to fill starving tummies (following a long bike ride along the Crab and Winkle Way – read more about that here)

Though it was a gorgeous, sunny afternoon, we were glad to sit down at the restaurant.  Despite the fact that it was 2.30pm already, it was very full with families, couples, daytrippers like us and some locals just enjoying the great food.

I was really pleased that instead of a children’s menu, they simply did half sizes of most of the main courses. The girls wanted Fish and Chips which were enormous and didn’t stay on the plate more than a few minutes. The batter was wonderfully thin and crispy and the fish was so light and as my eldest explained “not chewy at all”.

My husband had the daily special which was Smoked Haddock with Poached Egg.  The egg wasn’t runny which was a shame as the fish was beautiful and coated in a rich, creamy sauce.

It came with a beautiful side dish of Red Cabbage and Dauphinois Potatoes.

I had a Grilled Lobster. It was perfect in herby butter and served with Potato Salad, Red Onions and Green Leaves.

We didn’t fancy any of the desserts as we were so full so we settled our £50 bill and headed off towards the gorgeous shingle beach in search of our own oysters and winkles.
